From Imaginary Films 2000 comes a new independent British feature film called 'Egression'.
Set on the outskirts of London society, this unflinching drama portrays three friends and their various addictions in a gritty yet sexy account of contemporary urban mores. Portraying casual violence and sex as everyday occurences to Britain's underclasses, the film takes an even darker turn when one of the lead characters commits suicide leaving the other two with the self-recriminations, grief and guilt that inevitably follow.
Unapologetically European in outlook and aesthetics the film is aimed unashamedly at the Art-house market. In the vein of Jacques Audiard, the Dardenne brothers, or harking even further back to the cannon of the late Krzystof Kieslowski, this eliptical piece demands cerebral interaction from the audience. Nothing is laid on a plate for the viewer as spaces have to be filled and conclusions drawn from the non-linear storyline.
The only English works this could be compared to are perhaps Gary Oldman's 'Nil by Mouth', Andrea Arnold's 'Red Road' and Steve McQueens "Hunger".
Egression – Brief synopsis
'Egression'- Three people meet and become friends in London. Two of them form a relationship in turns loving and destructive. The death of one of them forces the others to reassess their lives and change or die. The main themes of 'Egression' are escape and redemption. All the characters are trying by some means or another to escape from aspects of their pasts. Whether it's by drinking, taking drugs, gambling, casual sex. What begin as fun distractions in youth lead to lives of self abuse and addiction. With forms of therapy frowned upon by the strata of society composing the piece and families distant or uncaring, the characters have no recourse but each other. After the lead female character takes her own life, the others are left with the repercussions; blame, guilt, self-doubt. Thoughts of the futility of their own existence. Deciding to simply keep on living is the nearest to redemption these characters allow themselves or are perhaps even capable of.
